Introduction and Goals
Dear Reader,
I spend significant time on a daily basis reading the material of other online writers, mostly in areas of finance, psychology, and science. These writers preach to their followers about the benefits of writing which they have reaped over time. They say it allows one to improve the creative self, expound on critical thinking abilities, and enable the building of a personal brand. As with many projects, procrastination is often the stumbling block that prevents one from embarking on this hobby. Since I also appreciate the ability to express thoughts in a manner that not only draws people in but leaves readers with a new idea, I am finally making the effort to move this block aside.
I believe one’s brand is always a work in progress and can be defined by how one started on the path he or she is currently on. I try to listen to several podcasts a week and oftentimes one of the first questions asked is how the interviewee “got started”. This question’s assumption is that the beginning must be connected to where that person is now, or it created the domino effect that spawned the person’s journey. I will revisit the early steps of my story in another post but want to touch on where I am now. My personal brand is influenced by how I spend my intellectual energy as well as how I spend most of my days. As a newly minted “Young Professional”, some of my day-to-day tasks may not seem intriguing to one focused on the short-term. As with many industries a junior professional often works on tasks that still are essential to the broader goals of the team, but are seemingly more tedious than one would prefer. This is why one’s early career choices should be approached with an eye to the future. Perspective is key when learning the ropes.
As this is an introductory post, I want to outline what I hope to capture with this blog and why it could be helpful for you - a friend, a student, or just a curious professional looking for the perspective of a fellow “beginner” in this uncertain world. My desire is to develop this blog to revolve around specialized areas while still focusing on what is broadly applicable. This will help me flex my analytical muscles while simultaneously create content attractive for the “masses” (on a relative basis). The goal is to understand a niche area that will teach lessons that could be applied to a variety of fields.
From a selfish angle, this blog is my attempt to take advantage of the pursuit of introspection and improved communication. In the past, writing has helped me clarify concepts and crystallize information in a way that makes it communicable to fellow students while allowing me to further understand the information. Each post will be an expression of thoughts I may have had or articles that piqued my interest.
Posts may also revolve around my journey in the world of investing. Now, although I am no professional investor, I have been an avid follower of the philosophies of investing whether that be through classic books, notable practitioners, or renowned academics. While an undergrad at Yeshiva University I leveraged this knowledge base to build a network, intern across a variety of investment funds and land an investment banking job. I hope the elaboration of my journey presents to the reader the possibilities created when an effort is applied to a process, no matter the starting point.
This should paint a brief picture of what is to be expected for now. I am always open to critique and ways my writing can become more enjoyable. Thanks!
